General Background
The F-4 Phantom II first entered US Military service in 1960. It was designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy but by 1963 it was adopted as the US Air Force primary fighter-bomber. Despite the size and weight of this Cold War icon the F-4 broke 15 world records and continued to hold five of them until 1975.

Produced from 1960 to 1981 there were 5,195 Phantom IIs manufactured. Eleven countries other than the USA had the Phantom II in their inventory.
The Aircraft
F-4C 63-7647 was delivered to the 8th TFW in 1964 and deployed in August 1965 to Korat, RTAB. During the Vietnam War the aircraft served with several squadrons. On June 5, 1967 while with the 555th TFS Major R.M. Pascoe and Captain N.E. Wells scored the war’s last MiG kill. After several more moves the aircraft transferred to the Hawaii ANG 199th TFS/154th TFG in 1978 where it remained until 1987 then going to the Oregon ANG 114th TFTS/142nd FIG. In 1989 the aircraft retired to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, McMinnville, Oregon.
