VFA-37 "Ragin Bulls" was established in 1966 as VF-37 and equipped with A-7 Corsair IIs. In November 1990 VF-37 became VFA-37 when they received the new McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. F/A-18C Hornet 165187 C/N 1321/C412 is part of VFA-37 "Ragin Bulls" that was re-assigned from the USS Harry Truman to the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN77). VFA-37 is due to make its first USS George H.W. Bush deployment on January 21, 2017 for a six month cruise to the Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf.Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy's Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode. During Operation Desert Storm, the F/A-18 proved that, on a single mission, one aircraft could serve as both fighter and a bomber.
