The Castle Class locomotives, otherwise known as the GWR 4073 Class, were a development of the earlier Star Class locomotives. The Castle Class locomotives were designed by Charles Collett, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the GWR. At this time there was heavy competition around Britain to develop faster and more efficient locomotives between the major railway companies. A total of 171 Castle Class locomotives were built, including 15 rebuilds of the earlier Star Class locomotives. The Castle Class were built over a 27 year period from August 1923 right through to August 1950 at the GWR’s Swindon works. No. 4082 'Windsor Castle' was one of the earlier Castles to be built in April 1924 and served for over 40 years before being withdrawn from service in 1964. No. 4082 was selected as the locomotive to pull the funeral train of King George VI from Paddington to Windsor, but at the time of his death it was undergoing repairs at Swindon. The name plates of No. 4082 were swapped with those of No. 7013 'Bristol Castle' and never changed back. This model captures 'Windsor Castle' in the earlier half of its working career carrying a BR Early emblem, thus meaning this is the original 'Windsor Castle'. Scale: 1:120 Length: 180mm
